Most budgeting apps start by asking for your bank login. Plenty of people stop right there, and that's a reasonable call. You can track every dollar your household spends without connecting anything, using a file your bank already lets you download.
Why some people skip bank-linking apps
- You'd rather not share a banking password or grant ongoing access to a third party
- Connections break, duplicate transactions, or quietly stop syncing
- Apps can pull far more history and detail than you meant to share
- When an app shuts down, your categorized history can go with it

Step 1: Download your statement as a CSV
Log in to your bank or card website yourself and look for "Download transactions" or "Export." Choose CSV (sometimes labeled "Excel" or "spreadsheet") and pick last month's dates. You're in control of exactly which account and which month leaves your bank.
Step 2: Sort each charge into a few categories
Keep the list short so it's easy to stick with: Housing, Utilities, Groceries, Dining, Transportation, Insurance, Debt payments, Subscriptions, Health, Kids, Entertainment, Shopping, Savings, and Other. Income goes into Paycheck, Side income, or Refunds & transfers.
Step 3: Find your one real number
Add up money in, subtract total spending, and you get what was left over this month. That single number tells you more than any chart. If it's negative, look at the two or three biggest categories first, that's where the change will come from.
Step 4: Repeat once a month
- Pick one day each month, the 1st or payday works well
- Download, sort, and check what was left over
- Compare to last month and choose one category to adjust
You can do this by hand with our free budget sheet. If you'd rather not sort every line, LedgerFast Personal ($79/year) sorts your uploaded CSV into these categories for you and builds a monthly Excel and PDF report. It never connects to your bank or card and never asks for a login, and the uploaded file itself isn't kept, only the transaction rows, in your private account.
